Tropical Storm Beryl Getting Stronger, Could Become a Major Hurricane

Tropical Storm Beryl is getting stronger as it moves towards the Windward Islands. It is expected to hit these islands as a major hurricane on Sunday and Monday.

Wind Speed and Strengthening

Beryl now has winds of 65 mph, which is 5 mph stronger than earlier this morning. Winds from the storm extend up to 45 miles from its center. The hurricane center says Beryl is expected to become a major hurricane soon.

Location and Movement

The storm is currently 820 miles east-southeast of Barbados and moving west at 23 mph. The hurricane center expects Beryl to continue moving west to west-northwest over the next few days. It should reach the Windward Islands late Sunday night and Monday.

Alerts

Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and the Grenadine Islands are under a hurricane watch. Martinique and Tobago are under a tropical storm watch. Other parts of the Lesser Antilles should keep an eye on Beryl as more watches and warnings may be issued.

Hazards

Beryl could cause a life-threatening storm surge of 5 to 7 feet in the hurricane watch areas. The storm may bring 3 to 6 inches of rain to Barbados and the Windward Islands on Sunday and Monday, which could cause flooding. Dangerous surf and rip currents could also occur in the Windward and southern Leeward Islands.

Next Advisory

The hurricane center will provide an update at 2 p.m. and a full advisory at 5 p.m.

More Information on Beryl

If Beryl becomes a hurricane on Sunday, it will be the farthest east that a June hurricane has ever formed. Only one other hurricane has formed in this area in June, and that was in 1933.

Future Changes

By Tuesday, conditions might change, and a strong ridge that is keeping the storm at lower latitudes might weaken. This could allow Beryl to move to higher latitudes and face more wind shear, which could weaken it to a Category 1 hurricane.

Another system is also being watched by forecasters. A tropical wave south of the Cabo Verde Islands might turn into a tropical depression or storm within the next week. As of the 11 a.m. update, there is a 40% chance of it strengthening into a depression in the next two days.
